The Brief
We were mandated by our global financial services client to source an MD for their insurance subsidiary in Mozambique. Sounds straight-forward? Turns out – it was not. Because our client wanted it all (of course): an executive – preferably Mozambican national – with substantial multi-national corporate experience, technical excellence, governance and reporting skills, and tremendous leadership stature.
And of this ilk, there are few – as we discovered.
Challenge and Outcomes
Most executives in the Insurance sector in Mozambique who possess the technical knowledge and experience managing well established insurance business are expats from Portugal and Zimbabwe. There are very, very few Mozambicans with multi-national experience operating at this level.
So the search needed to go beyond (way beyond) Mozambique.
After extensive market mapping, our team approached 77 executives across Africa, with twelve candidates going through further competency-based screening and interviews. An approved shortlist of six candidates was presented to the client – of the caliber required to lead the business forward.
The client must have been satisfied, as they immediately briefed the Jack Hammer team on a new MD role for their Kenyan business. Off to Kenya we go!
